€1.4 million granted for Community Creche for Portarlington. In 2000, the Department of Justice Equality and Law Reform pledged £290 million, over the lifetime of the 2002- 2006 Development Plan, to support the provision of childcare in the voluntary, community and private sectors. As a result the PCDA authorised the Community Development Officer to initiate public consultation and carry out a needs analysis of childcare provision in Portarlington.

The PCC Group was formed due to the lack of childcare facilities in the area which was identified as a major barrier to families, particularly, women who are now being forced to join the workforce for economic reasons and therefore the need for a community crèche was deemed a key project to tackle. After public consultation the Portarlington Childcare Working Group was set up, which then became the Portarlington Childcare Committee Co Limited by Guarantee. The committee is based in the local Community Centre.

PROJECT AIM
The establishment and development of a Community Crèche in Portarlington that will offer a stimulating and safe environment for children, and will provide quality affordable childcare to all parents / carers working or living in the area.
This service will be inclusive, integrated and an accessible service to all families in Portarlington and its surrounds.

OBJECTIVES
• To provide a quality community based childcare service.
• To ensure the service is child centred.
• To ensure the service meets the needs of parents and families availing of employment and educational opportunities.
• To provide a service which caters for the varying needs of children ranging from six weeks to fourteen years?
• To encourage the personal and social development of the child by providing them with the opportunity to mix with their peers

The provision of quality, affordable childcare is very much a socio-economic issue in terms of promoting equality, particularly for those experiencing poverty, discrimination and social exclusion. Our needs analysis shows the lack of childcare as one of Portarlington’s major shortfalls, and the inequality and disadvantage that exists as all available childcare places have been taken by the higher income bracket. Only two of the current crèche facilities take children under one year. The PCDA, the Community Development Officer and the Childcare Committee have been actively involved in projects with children/parents and education as their main focus.
