Official Opening

Portarlington Community Centre was officially opened and blessed on Friday 2nd July 2004 by Fr. Michael Noonan and the Rev. Leslie Stevenson after 20 years of hard work and commitment by the local community.

A lack of funds halted the project in 1980 but in 1999 following renewed interest from members of the community a maple floor was laid in the sports hall and its doors were finally opened to the community. Thanks to many years of dedication from committee members new and old the community centre is now a vibrant part of the community.

Over seventy invitations were issued as well as an open invitation to the community. There was a good turnout and a very enjoyable day was had by all. A special tribute was paid to the local FAS Community Employment scheme for the huge amount of work they contributed to the construction of the centre over the past few years.

New Facilities
A new extension to the front of the Centre was completed in time to host the main event of 2003 which was the Special Olympics. The Special Olympic Committee and a group of 48 participants, including coaches and medical personnel from Barbados, had the use of the entire Community Centre from 16th – 20th June ’03.

The installation of shower rooms is now completed. Each shower room consists of 4 shower units and changing area. It is the committee’s intention also to provide a kitchen/storage area to the rear of the building.

Work on the area outside the Centre cannot be completed as other projects are coming on line i.e. renovation and upgrading of the Swimming Pool and the proposed Community Childcare Créche.

Portarlington Community Centre and the PCDA received funding from the Dept. of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to buy a Colour Laser Printer and Photocopier to assist the workings of the centre as well as provide affordable services to community and voluntary groups to produce fliers, leaflets, headed paper etc. Both laser printer and photocopying services are now available to community groups at discounted rates, as well as the wider business community at commercial rates.
